Promoting active and fulfilling lifestyles for the elderly

As we age, it becomes very much important to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle. Engaging in regular physical activity offers numerous physical and mental health benefits, thus promoting overall well-being and vigor. To age gracefully and lead fulfilling lives, it is imperative that we embrace active lifestyles that suit our individual needs.

There are quite a number of benefits that the elderly derive from active lifestyles.

Did you know that older adults who are physically active have a lower risk of chronic diseases such as heart diseases, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and some types of cancer. They also are more likely to maintain their independence and function as they age.

The benefits of physical activity for older adults are even greater for those who have chronic health conditions.

  • Identify activities that they enjoy. Some of these include walking, swimming, dancing etc. it is important to find the activities that seniors enjoy and that are appropriate for their fitness level.
  • Schedule activity into their day. Physical activities should be scheduled into their daily plans. This could be going for a walk after breakfast, or even dancing with friends in the evening.
  • Be supportive. Encourage seniors to stay active. Ensure to offer support and encouragement.
  • Encourage them to volunteer. Volunteering is a great way to stay active and connected to the community. Seniors can volunteer at organizations or homes that need their help.
  • Encourage them to invite their peers to participate. Many seniors are more likely to be active if they are doing it with friends or family.


Older adults who are physically active are more likely to feel better about themselves, be more energetic, and able to do the things they want.
